The Lower School Curriculum

Key Stage 3 – Years 7,8 and 9

All students follow a broad, balanced curriculum throughout their education at Ysgol y Grango.

This includes study in the following areas of experience:

as part of the process of preparation for adult life, including the World of Work.

The National Curriculum Programmes of Study are being developed according to the schedule prescribed by Act of Parliament. In Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) all students follow a common curriculum in:

Information Technology is used in all subject areas and there are specific courses related to the National Curriculum taught throughout Key Stage 3.

Health and Sex Education are taught both as an aspect of subject lessons and as a component of modular courses from Year 8 onwards; these modular courses also enhance our students’ development in, and understanding of, study skills, environmental and community education, industrial awareness and careers.

Student Guidance Programme

During year 9 students are supported through their subject choices with a systematic and detailed programme. Tutors and students discuss choices in groups and one-to-one interviews. The choices are also discussed with parents during the Spring Term. Final decisions about students’ choices are agreed by parents, students and tutors at the end of the Spring Term. This information forms the basis of curriculum planning for the year ahead.
